Is a Mastopexy a Breast Augmentation?
Every day I receive many questions about breast surgery procedures, especially about the difference between a Breast Lift or Mastopexy and an Augmentation Mammoplasty with implants. Today, I want to clarify the most frequently asked questions and help you make the ideal decision if you are considering improving the appearance of your breasts.
What is a mastopexy, and what is breast augmentation?
Although both procedures are related to the appearance of the breasts, their purpose is different:
Mastopexy or breast lift augmentation?
This procedure corrects flaccidity and improves the position of the breasts without changing their size. It is ideal for women who experience a loss of firmness due to age, breastfeeding, or weight loss.
Breast Augmentation with Implants
This is a surgery that consists of placing silicone or saline implants to increase the volume of the breasts. It is the ideal option for those who seek to improve the shape, size, or symmetry of their breasts.
What is the ideal procedure for you?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions in my surgery. The choice between a Mastopexy and a Breast Augmentation depends on several factors that we will evaluate according to your particular case:

Sagging breasts: If the breasts have lost firmness and the nipple points downwards, a Mastopexy is the option for you. In some cases, it can be combined with implants to increase volume.
Seeking more volume without sagging: If the breasts are in a good position but you want to increase the size, breast implants are the best alternative.
Correction of both aspects: Some patients require a combination of a Breast Lift and Augmentation with Implants to improve firmness and increase volume simultaneously.
Myths and common questions
In my experience as a surgeon specialising in breast augmentation, I have heard many questions and myths about these procedures. Here I clarify some of the most common:
• Can implants lift sagging breasts? Not necessarily. If there is severe sagging, implants alone will not solve the problem. In these cases, I recommend a mastopexy with or without implants.
• Does mastopexy reduce the size of the breasts? Not in all cases. Although excess skin is removed, the glandular volume is maintained. However, some patients feel that their breasts look smaller after surgery due to the redistribution of tissue.
• Are the results permanent? No surgery stops natural aging. However, the results can last many years if you maintain a healthy lifestyle and avoid sudden weight changes.
Recovery and post-operative care
Both Mastopexy and Breast Augmentation require an adequate recovery process to obtain ideal results. Some recommendations include:
• Wearing a post-surgical bra for support and comfort.
• Avoiding intense physical activities for at least four weeks.
• Following the surgeon’s instructions for pain control and healing.
• Attending all follow-up appointments to evaluate the progress of the procedure.
